I've gotta say, that after hearing everyone's tracks on here, you lot are ultra talented. Being a complete noob at music production after a huge break from it, and trying to learn Ableton, it's taken me about a week just to get a snare sound that I think sounds half decent !
If I ever get to create a finished track it'll probably still end up sounding wack - but all this advice is top notch. Still not sure I'll ever, ever be able to get the level of clarity and un-mudiness in a mixdown that you lot seem to achieve, but godammit I'll give it a go !
I agree. It wouldn't matter if it was called 'Electro House' - but defining house music with unsyncopated beats as simply 'Electro' is wrong....not morally, but technically speaking.
The same happened with 'Garage' music. Originally it was old skool soulful house - 'Let No Man Put Asunder' being a prime example of the genre. Then what happened ? All of a sudden, Garage was the description for wack unmelodious crap that kids got wasted to in Ayia Napa !

Binalog your taste is fly mate ! Lovin' all them tunes. I'm sittin' here at work playing them as loud as me laptop will let me lol. Superb thread. In a similar vein to those don 80's tracks :
First up, one of my very favourite funk groups, and right up there with the best to emerge from good ole' Blighty - Total Contrast:
[YT]cNCWH9_1csA[/YT]
Then a killer tune from Sherrick - and sadly another singer that passed away at the age of 41. [YT]vGPlqCgKniQ&feature=related[/YT]
Great post Binalog on Thelma ! And I agree about the cover version. Juliet Roberts' vocals are lush and airy.
Lj some mo' fo' ya !
Crackin' tune this one - and check out ICE-T in his early days in the vid !: [YT]tQPMCxI4Ozs&feature=related[/YT]
An absolute stonker of a classic O'Jays tune: [YT]Knd59fI3a0Q&feature=PlayList&p=06EED0037D72A4FE&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=18[/YT]
Anyone who's heard Sgt. Slick's 'White Treble/Black Bass' will recognise this Ray Parker tune: [YT]W52FeO0MCsc&feature=PlayList&p=DEF2C952395AC5EB&index=2[/YT]
This one doesn't contain synth beats, but is such a dope tune it deserves to be here: (not so sure what the video's about mind ? ) [YT]HpNz_U6qskw[/YT]
Back to some classic funk by the masterful Paul Hardcastle - one of my faves this one. Has been ever since I was a youngun' ! [YT]wAOrrYDg8CQ[/YT]
I know this last one is quite recent, but it's a little played Luther tune that deserves it's spot: [YT]sY0xnUwa8Zs[/YT]
First of all, great to be amongst folks with superb taste in music - early 80's soul/funk is my real passion and there are some wicked tunes here !
Thought I'd throw a few into the mix, seeing as we're allowed to err on the funk side of things :
The maestress ! Sharon Redd: [YT]S_wanHJM7WA[/YT] Followed by the Maestro - the man James Williams. The epitome of 80's funk - nuff said: [YT]MkKXlCkt6RE[/YT] Then an ultra-classic - the man Toney Lee: not Phats & Small lol. [YT]yxS2MK0oVTc&feature=relatedfmt=18[/YT] Then a slower jam with so much soul - instantly recognisable by the great Thelma Houston: [YT]l2J6AQ3AyI0[/YT] For some P-Funk, a George bomb: best played LOUD ! [YT]PIzQvPC21G4&feature=related[/YT]
Lastly I thought I'd drop a pre-80's disco funk track that just makes you wanna dance on the tables : DO IT GENE !
So true - especially after her display on the X-factor recently. Off her face on something.
I remember years back the most popular acapella vocals at the time for laying over various instrumentals was Degrees of Motion 'Do you Want it right now'. Some of those turned out pretty swift.
@The Force... have you checked the first two? keys and melodies fit quite good there i think, thats why i like them.
The Kraftwerk/ Timbaland one sits ok, but the first one just kills the original Whitney tune. It's supposed to be an uplifting experience, yet against the monotonous drone of that one sample at the same pitch it has turned 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' into something dreary, depressing, dark, and so far removed from what the lyrics are trying to convey that it becomes irrelevant.
It's a shame, as the loop they've nicked from Cookie Crew's 'I got to Keep On' is a killer. I just don't like the end result.
Not a fan of any of these personally. Even if there isn't any nasty key clashes, the melodies don't sit right with each other, and some of them don't even sound that well synced.
So a mashup is taking 2 perfectly great tunes, and combining them to create a dull and lifeless recording that doesn't sound natural ?
