When did you start listening on electro?

  • Im new here,so i just wanted to know, where all are from and when did you started to listening at electro.

I'm from Stockholm in Sweden. And i started listening to electro at 1984. I was 16 years old,and i got hooked immediately. It was quite hard to find that music in Sweden,so i always listening at small radio-stations.

  • Hi Junge ,Im from Newcastle in the North-East of England .I have a similar history to to you,I started to listening to Electro around 83/84 and it blew me away. It was so different from any of the other music styles at the time, so much so that on occassions me and my friends were ridiculed for liking rap music but I didn't give a shit as I loved it so much.Im 40 now but my love for those days has never deminished and I still have to slap myself in the face and say that Im not that young anymore, they were the best days of my life and unfortunately they will never be repeated but I have learnt to live with that fact and learnt to love the old school even more because of it. We were pioneers, the originators, keep posting Junge because this site needs people like you,Hip Hop Don't stop.

  • It was around 1984 for me (I'm 38 now). Someone played Grandmaster Flash's "Scorpio" in their car and the rest was history. Anyways, I am one of those pesky Americans living in Portland, Oregon.
BTW, what is Runcorn famous for?

  • Yeah! 1984 for me too. And I'm 36 and a half. Really were the best days back then...... It's great when I have my Annual reunion with the old crew I used to break with.... although none of them can believe that I'm still spending a fortune buying Old Skool Wax.... but you will never own them all.....never!!!

  • To this day I might still have not known about Electro music or even Breakbeats for that matter if it wasn't for my brother buying a Breakbeat CD by DJ Icey back in 1997. From that point on I started to search for music similiar to that DJ Icey CD & it eventually lead me to the world of Electro music around 1998/99 starting with Dynamix II & beyond.

I'm from Manchester, CT, USA & I'm probably one of the younger dudes on this site(33 years old).

I really enjoy Electro from the beginning all the way to the present.

  • started with the robots by kraftwerk, first e-rap wax on my dual tt was Bambaataa's Planet Rock (in 1983), WCWC was THE reason to focus me to the West coast electro rap scene, the rest (like SJC already said) is history.

  • I also liked kraftwerk Aladin. I bought their record "computer world" around 1983, i think. Numbers is heavy. I used to practise electric boogie and robot dance. I loved to watch videos and tried to copy their steps. I danced evryday up to 1988 or something. Nowdays its rare i do robotdance=)

  • Right at Birth, Soon as the doctor slapped me, I punched him, and thru on as 12" jam!..

Well, just about true, being on the west coast, southern Cali, it really wasnt a choice, all the stations played hip hop, heavy metal, or spanish. Since I wasnt into spanish or heavy metal it was the only thing we heard, I guess it had more of an impact on me right around 1982, I remember at school, for some special day or something they had hired a D.J. to play at the school durring lunch.
When the transition was actually happening, One Way, Lakeside, The Bar-Kays, George Clinton, etc, began to use vocoders, Arcade Themes, & spaceships in their music.
The Vocoders is what got me hooked.

Mr. Jedi, you are only 5yrs. away from those fun yearly prostate exams they recommend you start doing at 40. Oh the joys of getting older... :o

  • 1983 for me, I was 12, although I remember liking Buffalo Gals which was 82 I think.
My cousin, who was 10 at the time, introduced me to Electro by playing me Streetsounds Electro 1 in my mum`s car and I was immediately hooked. the next day I went and bought it on tape and remember listening to it over and over again on my walkman. It was quite near the end of the school term when on the last day you didn`t have to wear your uniform and could bring games etc. in with you and I remember bringing in my parents portable radio cassette player to school and playing it to my friends. There was a lot of Electro Heads from that day on.
I`m 37 now and still feel the same.

I wonder if they start those exams in Sweden at 40 also :o

  • In hip hop since 83-84 but started with the electro sound when I first discovered and heard the "NY vs LA beats" comp in 85 that really blew out my mind, since then LA has always been my style. I remember clearly listening at my friend's place "rappers delight" on the radio so many times when it came out in 79, was sooooooooooooo good groove at the time.

    I am 40 u all old farts ;)
