I own a Doepfer A-100 basic system and i´m very happy with it, and i would serious recommend it to you as your first modular. The build quality and sound is very nice and Doepfer has a lot of modules you can chose from. You can start with a small and basic system and then you can add more modules when you can afford it.

i've heard mixed reviews about doepfer: some of their modules are supposed to be very good, some aren't. only hearsay though, i have never messed with or heard an actual doepfer.
have you seen their big step sequencer, the maq 16/3? beautiful.
btw, are you using any step sequencer, and if so: which? -

i have been thinking about dipping into modular territory ... only drawback is that it's so AWFULLY expensive.
