Great tips already! Only thing I'd add is some subtle panning to your tracks for a better mix. Not everything, just a couple of things to make them sit better. Not hard left or right, just subtle. I tend to slightly pan things like hh's, secondary snares, other random one shots. This gives a little more room. And of course if you're using samples, make sure those are quality to begin with.

Mixdown and Mastering (Questions and Help)

Yeah, quality samples of course.
I made a track with free C64 Samples and theyre not well recorded, so it sounds a little crappy.

got another one...
How do i know what is Mono or Stereo in the mix, i mean when i render the files over the Master everything is Stereo, right?
Or other, does that really matter if its Stereo or Mono

left + right channel = stereosingle channel = mono
not sure if i'm understanding your question though? if it's a cable issue, trs or stereo cable can be mono as well. stereo unbalanced, or mono balanced
also if you have sub bass in stereo, try to make left and right equal, or make them mono. you don't want any phasing on anything below 100hz
to add on to the compression issue, i've had bad experiences with Waves L3, I liked L2 a lot better. if you can, go with voxengo elephant. my $0.02

High-pass filter (or good EQ) on EVERYTHING that doesn't have bass - hats, snares, any synths, etc. This will free-up the low end for bass and kicks and keep your mix clearer.what's a good roll-off frequency for everything that doesn't have bass?

in general 100-200Hz would work, but use your ears

period !

thanks! somewhere i found the info that in "electronic music" you should roll off at about 250hz, but i realized that that is way too much and even tracks like snare or high leads lose a lot of body. the area of 100 - 200 seems to be quite sensitive and makes a huge difference.
-
The body of the snare lives at 240 so if your bass is right on top of that...
awesome frequency refrence -

This thread is also incomplete without a mention of the new Brainworx mastering limiter the bx_xl. Every once in a while a vst comes out that just crushes everything else out there....this is one of them.
A game changer
Make sure and watch the tutorial on their site so you know what your doing as I have never encountered another limiter like it. So don't bug when you first see it...it is actually one of the most intuitive and easy to use plug ins of this magnitude ever

huh?

A little more specific and I might be able to help you with your confusion.

what about Passeq ?

widens the mix, limits that separately, takes the center and limits that separately each on the hi/lows?i'm extremely skeptical to say the least, meh. i guess i'll just have to give it a try.

I use Nebula for eq...alexb libraries are awesome!! The black master eq sounds amazing!
http://www.alessandroboschi.eu/html/en/black_master_eq.htmHere is the link to Acustica's site...they make the Nebula vst that works with libraries of actual samples of real analog gear...unique and wonderful technology. Beware though...very cpu intensive and kinda buggy when used with certain DAWs....I usually treat my samples outside of my project...in mastering I have never run into problems as its just a few vsts and only one track obviously.

Give it a shot...if you go into it with at true mix the results are astounding and easy to achieve...try replacing your limiter with it at the end of your chain and see what you think. Its just amazing on the low end:)

Word to that.
The BX-XL limiter is a fantastic plug.
Well worth a try. -
