great thread... I just switched to a Mac and am wondering if I should get Cubase 5 or switch to Logic (currently using Cubase on my Windows lappie). I have some tracks that aren't finished and I am concerned about switching... am I going to have to go through a lot of hassle to convert them to Logic?
stay sticked to cubase until you finish all work you have , then new projects to logic ...or find mac version of cubase ...
Thanks!
currently using ableton live (controlled with a novation launchpad and korg nanokontrol) as well as an mpc1000 for sequencing.
What DAW has the best quality sound? I am new to software and wondered if there is any sonic benefits to one particular DAW or is the playing field pretty level? I was under the impression that protools and cubase were the best but I am not sure if I have been misled. I have also heard rumours that ableton does not sound as good as other DAWs. Note sure if this is true either. Is there actually one that sounds better or is it based on the expertise of the user, plugins ect? Cus with hardware mixers it's simple, certain mixers just sound better than others.
there's no best sounding DAW , there is silence when you do phase reverse , jump to gearslutz.com forum and read threads about it ... best sounding daw is in your ears and brain , every daw having pluses and minuses ,maybe i will say no to reason (didn't try 5) even if i made whole ep in it but when i rewire with nuendo i dissapointed too much how that really sounds bad ... but everything depends on samples/refills which you use it (speaking for general quality for every daw not for reason in particular)...
reason sounds bad? never actually used it myself but a couple mates swear by it and i know Aux 88 make a lot of their music in it and their stuff always sounds good.
aux88 use it reason , also use it d16 vsti's such as nephetone , drumazone and nithonat for their live perfomance and some minor studio work especially reason , belive me when i rewire reason into nuendo or other daw it's disappointing how poor reason sounds and i'm not the only one ...
there some videos that tom tom and keith showcaseing what they use

and i'm saying again :
best sounding daw is in your ears and brain , every daw having pluses and minuses.
I've heard people say the sound quality isn't as good in Reason as it is in either Cubase or Logic.
I don't understand why though!
I can concur with Alavux on Reason's questionable rendering engine...but only in the early versions as I bailed on it as a rewire vst in version 3. I have heard some cool stuff come out of thor but why bother with all of the amazing vst's out there today. I think otherwise I have heard pro stuff come out of every one of the usual suspects....I say work with the interface that catalyzes creativity and smooth work flow for your style as the elastique pro engine works the same in all of them and they all create zero or close to zero destructive renders...(All meaning Cubendo, Live, logic, Reaper, Samplitude, FL studio, Pro Tools and even acid)
Ok. Maybe this is an issue of rendering. Once again I come from the school of hardware mixers and recording to a dat tape. I did some experimenting with ableton where I took a song and put it in live then rendered it to see if there was any difference from the original file. To me I heard subtle differences, almost a tinny sheen was added to the track. Was this caused by the rendering options like dithering I used perhaps? Any advice on rendering settings for best results both pre and post mastering? I know pre master should be 24 bit and post 16 bit but other than that I am unsure about normalizing and dither.
Turn off dither and normalize for best outcome...Live 8 is a must as well...7 and before were not up to par.

It`s not the sound quality it`s the instruments that are used in Reason, the Redrum sounds crap, the subtractor too, the graphic design and the idea about Reason is very good but the finish is not.
Dunno if there are VST Instruments used in Reason 5, but without the vst instruments it`s worthless.
btw. i use Mad Tracker 2
If you're having sound quality problems with Ableton it's most definitely the options you chose, and also if the song was warped (any of the warp modes besides repitch will absolutely change the sound of the track, which is why you have to be careful about what you warp when you're producing). This article shows pretty clearly that Live's summing bus itself has nothing wrong with it: http://www.minzmusic.net/blog/…/ableton-live-summing-bus
PS I use Live, I used to mess around in FL Studio and now I'm thinking about getting it again just because it has so many sound-destruction tools and some cool stuff Live doesn't have (you can route midi-triggered envelopes to pretty much anything, as far as I know). I wouldn't use it as my full DAW, just as a VST in Live probably.
Good point woof! Leaving "auto warp" off is a good idea so if warping does need to take place it will receive your undivided attention. Complex pro is the closest you will get to changing the timing while maintaining as much of the original character of the sound but it is more cpu intensive and lessens quality the farther away from the original timing you stray.
Thanks guys for the ableton tips. I am using version 7 right now and It's about 200$ to upgrade to 8, I am guessing it's worth it? How has the audio rendering engine changed from 7 to 8? U mentioned 7 and below was inferior.
Like night and day...8 is when Ableton stepped up their rendering engine to hang with the big boys...I have found that best performance can be achieved with version 8.09 as they introduced max4live tech in 8.1 along with some "under the hood" issues. They are currently on 8.2...I keep 8.09 and always install the new ones as well so I can check to see if they sorted out their issues...8.2 is a little better but still doesn't work as well as 8.09.
